Alvin Mcculloch Sr.

October 4, 1940 — December 29, 2019

South Austin Location

Alvin Ray McCulloch Sr., aged 79, died suddenly at his home in Kyle, TX on Sunday, December 29, 2019. He was born October 4, 1940 in Aransas Pass, TX.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, son, Alvin Ray Jr. and wife Jackie, son, Allan Marton and wife Jennifer, daughter, Lavada Ann, grandchildren Tammy, Heath, Kevin, and Savannah, and four great-grandchildren.  Sisters, Martha McBee of Magnolia, Margie Zientek of Waller, and Mary Collins of Tomball, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Don and Billie Collins, whom he always introduced as both his in-laws and his friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, John McCulloch, mother, Minerva Waller, step-father Lewis Waller, and twin sister, Daphne Faye.

Ray served his country in two branches of the service, 3 years in the Army and 4 ½ years in the Navy. He said he always preferred the Navy because he had 3 squares and clean sheets, never a foxhole. His love of the ocean started as a teenager, working on shrimp boats, and continued on into his stint in the Navy. He served as a police officer in Aransas County in the time between his military services. He retired from Mrs. Baird’s Bakeries after 29 years, briefly worked for Miller Blueprint, and drove school buses for both the Round Rock School District and the Hays Consolidated School District until his ultimate retirement.

He was baptized on Easter Sunday, 1985 at the Bertram Church of Christ by his father-in-law and friend, Don Collins. Although he had also placed membership at the Hyde Park Church of Christ in Austin and the Westside Church of Christ in Round Rock, respectively, he always thought of the Bertram congregation as his home church.

Ray was an avid self-taught woodworker and many family members and friends cherish pieces of his work. He also had a life-long goal of learning to fly and did earn his pilot’s license and flew as often as possible until his health prevented it.

A memorial service will be held at the Bertram Church of Christ on January 18, 2020 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes (saluteheroes.org) or the charity of your choice.
