Deshay Bunton Jr.

October 14, 1951 — May 1, 2021

North Austin Location

Deshay Bunton Jr. was born to Deshay Bunton Sr. and Ruthie Mae Mitchell in Austin Tx, October 14, 1951.His early years of upbringing and education were in Travis County. Most of his adolescence was spent in the St. John’s area of Central Austin where most people knew him as “Chief”.

In 1997 he professed his life to Christ and attended East Side Baptist Church.

He joined the church under the leadership of Pastor Leland Dandridge where he remained a faithful member and loyal servant until his health failed. He served as a Ordained Deacon, a member of the male choir, usher board, President of the Brotherhood Ministry and also a Pastor‘s Aide.

He worked at the Stephen F. Austin and Sheraton Crest Hotel in the Housekeeping Department, and the Driskill Hotel as the Head Houseman for most of his career. He was loved and well respected by many of the customers and hospitality staff.

In 1998 he left downtown Austin hotels and went on to work as a Supervisor in the Maintenance Department for the Austin Independent School District. As he did in everyday life, while working at Duval Elementary School he ensured not only the building was well maintained, but the children and staff were as well. After suffering from a major heart attack he retired.

Big D took on many roles and responsibilities throughout his life. He started a cleaning company, he helped and aided in the care of many friends and relatives, but mostly he committed to not only his but others spiritual growth.

In 1987 he married the love of his life, Gloria Washington and together they raised 4 children. He was a caring and loving Husband, Father, Son-in -Law, Brother, Uncle, Grandfather and Friend who was always willing to lend a helping hand. If he wasn't watching cowboy movies, he loved to fish, barbecue and help his Wife with her plants.

Deshay leaves to cherish his memories his Wife and Best Friend of 39 years Gloria Bunton, Mother-in- Love Annie Mae Hancock, his Brothers Horass Mitchell (Tommie), Edgar Bunton Sr.(Lydia), Odell Bunton(Donna), three sons Oren Keith Hill, William Hill (Kay), Edward Hill (Kim), one daughter Diana Hill , two brothers-in-love Larry Washington (Pong), Lewis Washington Jr.(Wilma), sister-n-laws Joyce Thompson, Beverly Polk, seven grandchildren Brianna Smith, Daunita Hill, Dylan Hill, Mykah Hill, Tysha Lewis, Tyrese Lewis, Taqiy Lewis, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
